"Microsoft Clarity Launched by Microsoft" and "Site Explorer Function of Bing Webmaster Tools", this episode contains several practical tool introductions and search engine concepts, but the last one I want to recommend to everyone is the Google Search short film. There are several heavyweights in it, and you can also get a glimpse of Google's efforts in maintaining the core product of search. After watching it, the author was quite inspired, and I highly recommend it to everyone!

MFI: Content that only appears in the desktop version will not be indexed

Due to the epidemic, the full launch of Mobile First Indexing (MFI) has been postponed to March 2021. After its launch,Content (text, schema, images...) that only appears in the desktop version will be completely ignored。

Many SEOs believe that Google will give priority to mobile version content after MFI, but recent official statements have stated that content on mobile phones will be the "only" version, and content that only appears on the desktop version will not be included in the index.

Bing Webmaster Tools adds Site Explorer functionality

After Bing renovated the Site Explorer function, it was re-added to the new version of Bing Webmaster Tools.

This tool allows webmasters to understand the structure of the website at a glance, "How many web pages are under which subfolder?", "What are the clicks, impressions and backlinks of each section of the website?", "Which subfolder has health issues?", quite practical!

Will webpages with poor experience affect the SEO performance of other webpages on the same website?

This is the question John was asked on YouTube,The questioner's website is a large website. There is a forum on the website. It uses an older CMS. The user experience is poor and difficult to optimize. He is curious.core web vitalsWill forum pages with poor experience drag down the performance of other web pages with good experience??

View original video on YouTube

John's answer is that it depends on whether the website has a clear structure and if Google can understand it, e.g. "All URLs of /forum/ belong to forum pages with poor experience.", then it will not affect other pages; but if the structure is unclear and there is not enough information, Google may need to guess and use the score of the entire website to make the evaluation. At this time, web pages with poor experience may affect pages with good experience.

Tool: Compare differences in HTML before and after rendering

this toolAfter entering the URL, you can quickly see the important SEO components (various tags, content, links...etc), and whether there is any difference between before and after JS rendering.。

can only check one URL at a time, so for implementation, you may need to rely on other tools to scale up large websites. However, if it is a fast detection tool, it is good, and the interface is quite clear, so you can put the results in a presentation.

Microsoft launches website analysis tool - Microsoft Clarity

Microsoft Clarity is similar to Hotjar or FullStory. It is mainly used to analyze the user's experience on the website or check for website bugs. Several noteworthy functions and indicators include:

  • Heatmaps: Divided into click maps and scroll maps, you can see how the user interacts with the web page and whether the content is seen.
  • Session Playback: Know which page the user came in from, which page they left out from, how many pages they viewed, how long they stayed...etc., and present it in the form of a video!
  • Dead Clicks: Clicking on the page but no event is triggered means that the user may expect that the components on the page should have an effect after being clicked.
  • Rage Clicks: Clicking the same area quickly in a short period of time means that the components on the web page do not respond as expected after clicking, and the user is unhappy.
  • Excessive Scrolling: On the same page, the number of up and down swipes is greater than expected, which may mean that it is difficult to find web page information. .
  • Quick Backs: Quickly jumping back to the previous page after reaching a new page means that the user may accidentally leave the current page or be dissatisfied with the experience of the new page.
  • Price/Restrictions: Free and no traffic limit!

Fabrice talks about Bing’s crawling and indexing system

Fabrice Canel is Bing's external spokesperson and has been quite active in the SEO circle this year. He can be regarded as Microsoft's John Muller. I recently had an interview with him to discuss the operating mechanism of Bing. Although Bing ≠ Google, there are some interesting points that are worth taking a look at.

  1. CTR may be used to determine the relevance of the search term (assuming that the result of the search term is clicked, which is regarded as a symbol of satisfaction), thus affecting rankings
  2. The performance of featured snippets (FS) may be affected by the click-through rate of search results. A good FS should have a lower CTR.
  3. Links are less important to Bing than other search engines
  4. When asked about the difference with Google, Fabrice said that Bing wants to aim at helping webmasters actively submit new (updated) content, rather than them crawling the entire online world less efficiently.
  5. To remove outdated/deleted information from Bing, 301 to the homepage will be faster than returning 404/410

The above is the summary of one of the interview hosts. I have only translated the part. Several points also confused me, so I will not comment further. I didn't watch the whole movie attentively. Fabrice's accent was too strong and I accidentally got distracted after watching it twice XD. If you have watched the movie, please tell me if you missed any important context.

Official video: How Googlebot handles HSTS/307 redirects

The answer is,Googlebot ignores HSTS and will still directly use HTTP to request when it sees an HTTP link.。

HSTS (HTTP Strict Transport Security) is a further protection mechanism for HTTPS, actively informing Chrome that the URL of the website can only be requested using HTTPS. In this way, when the user clicks on an HTTP link, Chrome will automatically convert it to HTTPS. This process is 307.There are two benefits. First, it saves the time of handshaking with the server during HTTP requests; second, it reduces the risk of being attacked during HTTP requests.。

Google Micro Movie: How Google Search Works

This one-hour video mainly talks about Google's mission, information collection, difficulties encountered, and how to optimize the core product of search internally. Although it is a documentary about Google's public relations, and it is quite long, the shooting techniques and images are very good, and it is very similar to the movies you would see on Netflix.

I highly recommend that friends who are involved in the SEO circle take a look. There are many Search Team bosses who have joined Google since its early days to give speeches, and you can also get a glimpse of the implementation process of DeeoRank in 2019.。

View original video on YouTube
Key excerpts (I didn’t really want to type this out because I wanted everyone to watch the video for themselves, but if you really don’t have time, you can still click on it to watch)
  • Spam is still a very headache problem,40% of the web pages crawled by Google in Europe are spam pages。
  • Although there are many optimizations every year,Google search is far from perfect and will continue to evolve, due to changes in search habits, changes in devices, changes in content formats, etc., about 15% of search terms every day are ones that Google has not seen before.
  • Google searches change very frequently.has an average of six algorithm changes every day, which translates to thousands of times a year. But not only that, behind the implementation of these thousands of updates are 200,000 to 300,000 experiments, so many hypotheses and experiments were not successfully implemented in the end.
  • Google hired a group of Search Quality Raters to train their algorithm, based on a more than 100-page guide, rates search results as high or low quality.
  • When deciding whether to implement an optimization, balance is also very important. It’s not a good thing if an update improves results but slows down the return of search results.。
  • Google occasionally gives bad answers. For example, in 2016, when someone searched for "Did the Holocaust happen?", Google gave results that were conspiracy theory pages claiming that the Holocaust did not happen.Although these pages are not of high quality (error information), they are highly relevant to this search (because they "answer" the question),
  • When there is a search problem, often the part that surfaces is just the tip of the iceberg of the larger problem.Google will not change the search results for specific words, but will only improve it from the algorithm。

Thank you for reading this far! I hope this summary will be helpful to you. If you have any questions or ideas, please let me know. Any form of interaction will be a good motivation for me~
