Googlebot will start crawling with HTTP/2

Starting in November 2020, Googlebot will crawl some websites using HTTP/2 (h2).

Fetching with HTTP/2 can be more efficient and save Google's resources. Even if the server supports it, the webmaster has no way to force Googlebot to crawl with h2. It is up to Google to decide whether to upgrade from HTTP/1.1 to HTTP/2.

When Google decides to crawl your website with h2, the webmaster will receive a notification in GSC. In addition, you can also use server logs to see how Googlebot crawls. The main advantage of

website supporting h2 is that it is faster and saves resources, and it will not affect the indexing and ranking of the website.

Google Search Podcast EP.6

This podcast episode begins by discussing several common confusions related to rendering, including the differences between "pre-rendering", "server-side rendering", "hydration", and "dynamic rendering".

also mentioned that these Googlers have a company policy (Honest Results Policy)You must abide by this. Basically, regardless of whether you have spent money on advertising or you are an employee of other departments at Google, they are not allowed to help specific groups or people privately. Questions must be answered through public platforms (for example: twitter, forums, YouTube).

So if you've ever sent a private message or email to John and Gary, but didn't get a response, don't feel bad, because they can't even answer other Googlers' questions. It was specifically mentioned that the Account Manager of Google Ads often reports clients' SEO problems to them for debugging in order to maintain relationships with advertisers, but this is actually not allowed.

Myth buster: Google and the SEO community

This episode invites Barry Schwartz to discuss the relationship between Google and the SEO community with Martin. I originally thought it would be a boring episode, but many topics are quite interesting from Google's perspective on what can and how to talk about it. After watching it, you can understand the helplessness of these Google spokespersons.

Several discussion points include:

  • Google Featured Snippets allow users to see them without clicking on the web page. Is this a good thing or a bad thing?
  • SEO hopes that Google will be more transparent, but usually the more transparent it is, the easier it is to be misunderstood. Why?
  • Google doesn’t use Chrome or Android data to affect rankings. Why don’t SEOs believe it?

Official article: How search results reflect current events in real time

Danny Sullivan has recently spent a lot of space explaining the workings behind Google, but I find this article very interesting, and it happens to be something I have personally experienced recently, so I will briefly translate it.

google gives different results based on time and location
「Why is the sky orange?" search results

「Why is the sky orange? "", this search term suddenly received a lot of searches in mid-September, because this strange phenomenon occurred in the sky in the Bay Area due to wildfires.

Language understanding is the core of search, so when Google's algorithm encounters this unprecedented situation, it relies on other information (such as the time and location of the searcher) to supplement the critical context behind the search intent.

In this example,Google's freshness indicators (freshness indicators) determine that this word is an emergency, and it needs to provide "newer" and "local" information to users, rather than the pages that have been ranked for this word in the past, because even if the search words are the same, the searcher's search intention is different from the original one., in the past it may have been to understand the cause of dusk, but now it is to understand this special phenomenon.
