SEO e-Newsletter Issue 68 – 2022.11.01~2022.11.15

I also absorbed a lot when compiling this e-newsletter, especially the research reports in the second and fourth points, which contain a lot of good data that can be quoted; the podcast in the ninth point mentioned that Google Search Central also invited an external SEO agency to help when the website was relocated, which was quite interesting; and finally the AI tool in the fifth point is very easy to use, and I recommend everyone to play with it!

[Announcement] The retirement time of the old version of GA for paying customers has been extended

Everyone should already know that Universal Analytics willJuly 1, 2023no longer collects information. Google recently announced that this expiration date for paid users (Universal Analytics 360) will be extended to July 2024.

The price of the paid version of GA is at least $150k US dollars per year, so if the website has not installed GA4 yet, it is better to give up and get used to GA4 quickly.

In addition, I recently saw this Looker Studio template for diagnosing GA4. You can see how far the GA4 account is from the data collection limit, all events (and whether they are conversions)...etc. If the data is too large, it will run very slowly, but it is very interesting and you can try it on your own account.

[News] Google Merchant launches new interface and how to return to the old interface

Google Business Profile last year launched the function of managing business files directly on Google search. Recently, someone noticed that when entering each business from the Business Profile Manager (Business Profile Manager), they will be forced to the Google search screen, and cannot be managed on the old manager interface. It is very inconvenient for people who need to manage a large number of local merchant accounts at one time, causing the Local SEO circle to lament.

However, many people on Twitter have found ways to switch back to the old interface (Method 1 / Method 2), so people who are used to the old interface can still change it back, but these methods may become invalid later.

[Research] Zero-clicks Search by Semrush

Semrush published a study to discuss user behavior on Google SERP after entering a search word. Research breaks down behaviors on the SERP into five categories:

  • Organic clicks
  • Paid clicks
  • Google clicks: The URL changes, but it is still Google’s URL.and the search term remains unchanged. The possible reason is that the search went from general search to shopping, images, news...etc.
  • Google keyword change: The URL changes, but it is still Google’s URL.But the search term changed, the possible reason is that you have done other searches or clicked Google's reference search terms.
  • Other zero clicks: The remaining behaviors after deducting the above four are mainly people who order nothing.

[Technology] Usefetchpriorityto optimize LCP

fetchpriorityThis HTML attribute can tell the browser the fetching priority of a resource. When the browser renders a web page, it will decide which resource should be fetched first based on various factors (ex: file attributes, location...etc), and this attribute can further ensure that resources (such as LCP) that you want to load in advance have a higher order.

Many people may confuse the two, butfetchpriority="high"andrel="preload"is different. The latter helps the browser "discover" the resources to be downloaded early, while the former helps the browser determine which of the resources to be downloaded should be processed first.

[Video] Service Worker Two or Three Things

View original video on YouTube

In the video, Martin asked Dave Smart to talk about the topic of Service Worker.past podcastsonce mentioned that the two most common uses of Service Worker are to enable offline reading of web pages and to send push broadcasts.

Internet technology that does not seem to affect Google crawlers will always cause SEO impact when used "creatively". In this video, Dave shares several extreme situations he has encountered and how to detect them.

I have never been exposed to a website that has problems caused by service workers, so I learned a lot after reading it, including the concept of service workers, how to turn them off in DevTools, what situations may cause problems, how to communicate with engineers...etc.

[Abstract] Search Central Documentation and SEO

View original video on YouTube

This episode has John and Lizzy chatting about documents on Google Search Central. Lizzy's main role is a technical writer. She admitted that she had no idea what SEO was before she joined this group, and she did not particularly consider how to make these SEO documents more "SEO Friendly" when producing content.

Since Lizzy is responsible for search-related files on the developers.google.com website, she was also assigned to be responsible for the SEO of the site. John used this question to ask her many basic concepts of SEO, such as redirect, sitemap, robots.txt... and so on. It sounds a lot like the interviewer asking the newcomer what SEO optimizations he has done on the website.

If you have time, you can still listen to it. There are some very interesting stories in it. For example, there was a problem with the sitemap and an engineer was asked to fix it, but the engineer instead looked at Google's sitemap and said it was not a big problem and refused to prioritize it. Or they hired an outside SEO agency when the website was revamped two or three years ago and gave them a lot of suggestions.

[Abstract] BrightonSEO on-site Q&A

View original video on YouTube

This podcast episode is in mid-October AtBrighton SEO's event, John and Lizzy's public Q&A was recorded. The host compiled the questions of the guests and asked them questions + chatted. If you have time, you can listen to it and feel the atmosphere of foreign conferences. As for the content, most of them are official answers.

Subdomain vs Subfolder- John said that everyone knows that subdomain will theoretically be regarded as another website, but when he asked Google's search engineers how to answer this question externally, the answer he got was that there is no difference between the two.

Link Building- John said that he can imagine that the impact of external links will become less and less in the future, especially as Google becomes better and better at knowing what content to give when. From the perspective of crawling, links are still very important. They help us discover new web pages, but the importance of the ranking part will become less and less. In fact, it is much lower than in the past.

Should the Organization’s Schema be placed on every page?- Lizzi replied that it was not necessary, but it would not matter if she did. Schema is not only a thing of Google or SEO, but it is completely fine for webmasters to use schema attributes that are not supported by Google.
